Saturday, September 28, 2019 - Docked in Split, visited Split, Croatia

This is the other Croatia port we visited in 2013, therefore we planned to do a self walking tour.  After we walked around Diocletian's Palace’s Peristyle - the central square of the Palace, we saw the Cathedral and Bell Tower of St. Domnius. The church is dedicated to the Virgin Mary, and the bell tower to Saint Domnius.  This cathedral is one of the best-preserved ancient Roman buildings still standing. It was built as a mausoleum for Diocletian, the last famous persecutor of the Christians. In the 5th century the Christians got the last laugh, destroying the emperor's sarcophagus and converting his tomb into a church dedicated to one of his victims.

We also climbed up to the Bell Tower for views of old town, port and the Adriatic Sea.

Then, we visited the Temple of Jupiter dedicated to the Ancient Roman god Jupiter. Worth to mentioned is the black granite sphinx that guards the entrance is over 3500 years old, and was brought all the way from Egypt by the Roman.

Then we revisited the Riva which had more tourists than we saw in 2013.

The one thing turned us off was the eateries along the Riva won’t accept Euro and their service attitude was terrible too.  After the brief walk, we turned back to inside of the old town for some more photos, then we headed back to the ship.
